Little things like that sure do make life a little bit easier when installing videocards! To be honest we’re a bit surprised by the lack of features not included on the Abit SRX.

With Abit long known for openly adopting overclockers as their zbit producing a SiS motherboard, things are certainly starting to get interesting However, this makes it quite clear that Abit is targeting the value market with this board.
ABIT SR7-8X (SiS 648): DDR400-Powered
As this makes the IO configuration non-standard, Abit have included qbit IO plate so you can replace the one in the case. Competition is good, and this will only drive prices down further. The layout of the board is pretty good, the IDE drive connectors are in the perfect location to the right of the DIMM slots – this way the cables don’t block the case airflow or interfere with the PCI expansion cards.
Most users tend to buy what they need and install as they go into one of the five open PCI slots. The Northbridge is cooled by a green passive heatsink, which is quite unusual of Abit as they often have an active cooler attached to the Northbridge on most of their motherboards. It was slightly disappointing to see the lack of RAID and firewire support, even though the board’s Soutbridge supports these two features. My guess is that it ran cool enough without a fan attached and besides, I’m sure most of you can do without the added noise anyway.
This is not the most elaborate software bundle we have seen packaged with a motherboard, however, you must remember that Abit is targeting the enthusiast market with this board and many enthusiasts are most likely to already own this software, and are just looking for a cheap, high performance motherboard – without the bells and whistles. Something I’m greatful for is there are no small capacitors near the AGP lock!
The board comes packaged in a nicely designed blue, black and white box. Providing only 2-channel audio, its sound x8 is no where near as good as what you would be getting from a PCI audio solution, however, it is certainly sufficient for general windows use.

The IDE and Floppy connectors were also smartly placed, allowing easy installation of drives once the board has been installed into your PC. It was good to see that even thought Abit used a standard green heatsink on the SiS Northbridge, they also took the time to apply some thermal paste on it.
